Book Review: The E-Myth Revisited

This was interesting to read, especially about the different strategies and ways there are to have a business and run it successfully, and then to also learn about how a business could be so much more beneficial if one creates it and runs it correctly. I could see myself in a lot of the ideas and I would try to see myself in the future running a business successfully. I am glad I read the book and will probably read it again.
The first and one of the biggest things that I liked was when the author teaches that one must not try to be all characters in the business team. He described why it is very difficult to try and be the technician, the manager, and the entrepreneur. I could see myself getting caught up in wanting to do everything myself and trying to be all three, but it was good advice to read that one should not do that. This makes sense to me too because most businesses that succeed that I know of have a partner or two who help run it. This team now seems much more effective than just one person trying to do everything.
The different phases of a business were also interesting. I think it is difficult to push yourself out of the comfort zone when you are running something somewhat successfully. I realized the importance of having clear and precise business plan before getting started. It would be hard to just randomly fall into running a successful business (if not impossible, I think). The book touched on the importance of getting help and getting as much as you can. It is always good to be a student and trying to learn new things, and getting advice from people who have been where you are before.
The author talks about a ‘turn-key revolution’. This is to create a business that can run itself, rather than create a job for you. “Your business is not your life”, and the author discusses why we should keep our business life separate from our personal life. I know a man who created a very successful venture that made good money. He ran the business for about two years, and then sold the company for a great profit. During those two years, he worked very hard. He was traveling a ton and working hard because he had basically created a job for himself. He did have a partner, but it was obvious that my dad was still doing a lot (or most) of the work himself. He was very tired and would be working from the early morning on into the night and even on the weekends. Hearing that one should create a business that is able to run itself is a goal that we should all have for ourselves less we create a job and work ourselves into the ground. Owning your own business is not a benefit of being an entrepreneur. Having an automated income is a benefit of being a an entrepreneur. We want our time and freedom, not a created job.
My two requirements for a career are; that I love what I’m doing, and in order to love it, it will have to be positive and productive, and the other is that it will allow me to have free time. Being an entrepreneur and finding a positive business gives me just that, as long as I am able to create a business that can run itself and I will not have to be there every step of the way helping it along.
The other parts of the book were interesting as well. I liked reading about the different strategies that are crucial to have for your business. Having a primary aim will help establish goals that you want for your business. I am a big believer in goals and reading this part of the book reiterated the importance of establishing them early in the growth of the business. It is a nice reminder, I suppose, to read that almost everything in life needs goals in order to successfully create and progress.
All in all it was a good read, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a little guidance or just a thought-provoking, productive book.
